Welcome to St Andrew's C of E Primary School

Year 6 visit to Life Skills Okehampton 2011

On Thursday 15th September Year 6 attended a Lifeskills programme in Okehampton. Experts from many relevant fields including: Fire service, road safety, Police and RNLI, ran short workshops with the children.
We learnt how to save someone’s life when they are unconscious. We went into partners, one of us had to pretend we were unconscious and the other one had to try and save them. Then we had to ring a fake operator and read a piece of paper to the women, so it gives her all the information she needs to know what right equipment they need and where they have to go.
Next we went to R.N.L.I. and learnt all about what to do if you see someone in trouble and what not to do. Next we had to shout as loud as we could to inform a lifeguard, if we were in trouble. Then the instructor told us all about the different types of flags and what to do if we saw them. Then it was time to move on!
After that we went into the back of a fire engine (it was filled just a screen and a projector). The lady in the fire engine put up a website on the screen that had a picture of a kitchen with lots of dangers that could create a fire. All we had to do was to click on all the dangers. When we had done we moved on to the next station!!
After the fire engine we did a quiz. What we had to do was simple, we had a remote-control and they had numbers and letters on them also a true or false button. When we pushed one of the buttons it sent the answers to the computer and then it showed a graph of how many children chose each answe.r It was so cool the quiz was really fun and we all enjoyed it!!
We also played a recycling game, learning what can be recycled and what can’t. We learnt lots of information about landfill sites, recycling companies and different types of recycling such as recycling food, glass bottles, plastic objects, cans and many other items.
