Year 5

Our trip to Tavistock

It was a cold day when year 5 from St Andrews went to Tavistock. Mr Jones had a very brief talk with us about our trip.

After a while we walked to Bedford square along the Plymouth road. Once we had got there Mr Jones split us into groups, I was with Mrs Rookes. We stood right outside the newsagents.

We had a question sheet were we had to ask people if they could spare a few moments to answer some questions. One of the examples “do you think the high street should be closed to traffic?” we asked, they replied with “yes”. Most of the people we asked said “yes”.
One of the other things we did was a traffic survey where we had to count all the cars and bikes and buses.

At 10.40 we all walked to Bedford square and met Wing Commander Maisey who told us all about the people who died in the world war.

We were all invited back to the royal British Legion were we had a drink and some crisps.
We all gathered up again and walked to Tavistock Parish church (Saint Eustachius. We all looked outside the church and also looked at the remains of the old Tavistock Abbey. We all crossed Plymouth road again and walked to Abbey Chapel were there were lots of grave stones which looked really, really old.

Then we went along side the river and looked at the leaf collector - sadly we did not see it in action.

Then we all walked all the way back to Tavistock Methodist church to have our lunch. Once everyone had finished we all cleared away the chairs and tables and put them on the side. We all played a really fun game called Rat, Rabbit Matthew and Olivia won.

At 1.30 Mr Peter Mawer who is a church Stewart arrived and led us all upstairs to the main church for a talk about the things that are different in the churches. We found there were a giant board, a band and some computers. We all walked around to see all the different things. Peter then told us all about John Wesley who first of all did not really think much of Jesus but soon loves and obeys him. After that he travels to all different countries only to just tell people stories about Jesus. Peter then took us very kindly on a tour of the church we walked down a secret passage with some really steep steps as well.

Once we had finished we thanked him very much. We all gathered our belongings and went back to the cars.
