Year 5
Year 5 residential trip to St Ives
Diary extracts from year 5 pupils.
Monday - On the way to our hotel in St.Ives we went to Charlestown Shipwreck and Heritage Centre. Here we were told about the history of Lifeboats, Shipwrecks and the conditions that the seamen and their families used to live.
We saw lots of things that divers had found from lots of different shipwrecks.
We went to the harbour in Charlestown to see, draw and study a 'Stack' as we are learning about this in geography.
In the afternoon we went to Wheal Martyn where we found out about the process of China Clay.
On Tuesday we went to RNAS Culdrose where we were told about the different helicopters and there uses and about rescue and survival.
Ginny was lucy enough to sit in a cockpit of a fighter plane and now knows how to fly!!
We then went to Poldark mine where we went down the mine and found out about what it was like to be a miner a long time ago. Not very nice!
On Wednesday we went to Pendennis Castle and went back in time to being soldiers in World War 2.
We looked out for the enemy from the lookout and then we fired a big gun at them.
They only had a very small space to eat and sleep....they had to look smart all the time.
In the afternoon we went to Chysauster Ancient Village. Here we could see how houses were built before the Roman times.
We sketched how the walls were made and the remains of the village.
During the week we visited the beach..... It was cold but fun.
An evening at the beach for a sandcastle competition.
Thursday morning we studied St.Ives town front and harbour area.
We sketched different views of the harbour and then discussed the erosion of the coastline.
Time to take in the views of St.Ives before heading off to East Pool Beam Engine.
We learnt how these machines raised men and ore from 1600 feet below ground.
Friday, time to go home! But not without a visit to Goonhilly first.
There was so much technology here.
We saw one of the first telephones and how they had changed.
How the mobile phone has changed from a brick to the size of a credit card!
