Trip to Tavistock November 2011
A recount of the trip to Tavistock by a pupil from year 5
On Tuesday the 15th November year 5 from St.Andrews C. of E. Primary School were going on a school trip to Tavistock. When I arrived at the year 5 classroom there was a buzz of excitement. When I had settled down I went to my seat and put my bags on the table. The second I put my bags down I started chatting to Annalinn about the day ahead.
At 9:00 am Mr. Jones our class teacher talked to us about the day. After that we got into our groups to travel to Tavistock. Mr. Jones then talked about being sensible in the car and that we were lucky that some children’s parents were taking us to Tavistock.
When we had got in the cars we headed of to Tavistock and on the journey we passed animals lying in the sun and the grass sparkled in the sunlight.
When we arrived at Tavistock Methodist Church we got a clip board and pen. Mr. Jones told us that is was the field work that we were going to do at Bedford Square or Duke Street. After that we set off.
When we all got to Bedford Square, we split into groups. My group was Amber, Harry, Jaeden, Jake, my Mum and myself. When we arrived at Duke Street, we started our work.
We started our questionnaires at 9.50am. We meet jolly and happy people, but also many people rushing about who had not got time to complete the questionnaire. We did however manage to get six completed questionnaires.
Next we started our traffic survey. This task done we set back to Bedford Square.
Gratefully it was snack time and I handed out chocolate bars to everyone.
Snack time over , we all went to the War Memorial to meet a Mr. John Mathis from the Tavistock Royal British Legion, who kindly discussed the importance of the Memorial in the Guildhall Car Park. With the talk completed we all stood for a minute silence to remember those who have died in the past wars and also those people still at war in the world today. Respectfully we placed a cross with a poppy by the War Memorial.
Year 5 walked up to one of the oldest buildings in Tavistock which happens to be Tavistock Royal British Legion. Inside Mr. Mathis talked about World War 1 and World War 2. We gained lots of fantastic information and had many questions to ask. We were very lucky to have another snack break.
We walked back to Tavistock Methodist Church to pick up our bags which we had left earlier that morning. Lunch time had arrived and then a game of Rat and Rabbit, which you had to jump over a rope.
Mr Peter Mawer generously allowed us a tour of the Methodist Church, which was very different from any church I have ever seen. Instead of pews there were chairs and a TV for the priest to look at words for singing. Also there was a drum on the altar.
The next church we visited was Tavistock Parish Church in Plymouth Road.
As I entered the church I could smell the scent of burning candles. We were seated in the pews for a talk by Rev Brierley who spoke about how old the church was and we were privilege to play the organ. To our disappointment our talk had ended, Rev Brierley allowed us all to walk around.
Our amazing day had come to an end; we collected our bags, said thank you and goodbye, then travelled back to St. Andrews School. We reached our school, gathered together in our class to count heads and said goodbye for another day.
