Day trip to Carnglaze: 7th October 2010

Year 4 went on a school trip to Carnglaze Caverns near Liskeard on Thursday 7th October as part of their work on Rocks and Soils in science. They had a super time and Caroline, the owner of Carnglaze, gave a fabulous talk on rock families and their properties. The children were also able to handle the rocks and carry out a simple experiment with water.

She then took us into the man made mine and talked about the conditions miners would have had to work under and the children were able to handle the tools they would have used. Within the mine, the children were astonished when she turned on the lights in two caverns to reveal hidden pools, one as deep as a house!

Finally, Caroline took us on a woodland walk and showed the children the difference in soils between a beech wood and an oak wood and pointed out the various habitats of animals and birds which lived in the wood. A good time was had by all!

One child said “I would like to have a time machine so that I could keep going back and another said “It was really fun and I enjoyed the caverns the most”
