Welcome to St Andrew's C of E Primary School

Carnglaze October 2011 with year 4

Year 4 went to Carnglaze on Wednesday 12th October as part of their work on rocks and soils. Mrs Richards who owns and lives at Carnglaze, took them into her conservatory to tell the children how different rocks are formed and to show examples of slate (metamorphic), chalk (sedimentary) and granite (igneous). They carried out an experiment to see how quickly water was absorbed by the different rocks. After this the children were kitted out in hard hats to go into the caverns where they saw examples of different types of rocks found in Cornwall. Mrs Richards explained what tools miners would have used to form Carnglaze Caverns and told the children about their working conditions. Year 4 then went on a tour of the caverns and saw the beautiful, deep, turquoise underwater pool. After lunch they went for a walk through the woods where Mrs Richards pointed out the differences between the part of the wood where beech trees mainly grow and those where mainly oak trees grow. She showed them different animal holes and different soils. The children also had great fun spotting all the fairies and their homes! A great day was had by all.

One child said that he really liked the rock exhibit and that the trip was grand!

Another child said that he had never heard of metamorphic, sedimentary and igneous rock so he had learnt a lot.
