Year 6 made African masks as part of their African studies.
If you would like to make your own mask follow how two pupils from year 6 made theirs.

Equipment: Balloon, newspaper, wallpaper paste,Gum tape, string, card, paint and varnish.
Step 1: First we got a balloon.
In pairs we covered the balloon in paper mache, using strips of newspaper and paste. We kept doing this for a couple of weeks to thicken it. When the paper mache was dry we cut it in two.

Step 2 :Next we added features using card and rolled newspaper.
We put gum tape on our masks to tidy up the edges. (We put water on the gum tape so it would stick).

A finished mask ready for painting.

Who's behind the mask?

Step 3: After that we painted our masks with a base coat and then added rope and string. We added patterns to our masks.

Step 4: Finally we put glaze on our masks to make a shiny effect.

Have fun making your own mask.
